Cherry Cake, Zug

Zuger Kirschtorte was invented by pastry chef Heinrich Höhn, who settled in Zug when he was 20 years old. He saw the many cherry trees in the town and wanted to use the widely-known cherry brandy in his baked products. He soon started trying out various ideas, and after several years he had perfected the recipe: his experiments had given rise to a cherry cake doused in cherry brandy. The cake was a success right from the start; in fact, it was so popular that before long he needed a bigger bakehouse and he patented his recipe.

These days, the original cake is made by the Konditorei Treichler, which also runs a museum on the site of the original bakery.
