Höcklistein Winery

A historical vineyard at the upper end of Lake Zurich, with a magnificent view of the lake and the Town of Roses, Rapperswil.

Wine has been produced at the upper end of Lake Zurich for over 1,000 years. At times, winegrowing was even the main source of income for the entire region. The Höcklistein vineyard, with its steep, south-facing slope, is blessed with sunshine almost all day long, which gives rise to some of the best wines in the region. Indeed, part of this extensive vineyard is known as “Äfenrain”, an allusion to the medieval word, “Aff”, meaning the feeling of inebriation that people experienced after drinking the powerful wine grown here.

The rather barren, calcareous soil is ideal for the large Burgundy varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as the indigenous Räuschling. In addition, the Weingut Höcklistein grows Sauvignon blanc and Merlot.
