Zug is the city of cherries. From here come the sweetest cherries, the most delicious cherry cake, cherry sausages, Kirsch liqueur, and much more besides.
The Zugerberg is a popular place for excursions in winter, too. For example, for cross-country skiing or winter hiking.
Immerse Yourself
After arriving in Zug, Lake Zug is just a short walk away. A stroll along the lakeside promenade takes you to the picturesque Old Town, where Zug’s landmark, the Zytturm tower, can be found. Interested visitors can collect the key to the tower at the Wunderbox boutique next door. Those who would like to enjoy a coffee first can do so right across the street at Bobs Foodstore.
Incidentally, the clock faces on the Zytturm show more than just the time. Those in the know can also read the days of the week, the months, the position of the moon, and the leap years.
Heading for the Heights
The Zugerberg lies 1,093 meters (633 ft) above sea level. Here visitors can enjoy not only the magnificent view, but also various walking and hiking paths, as well as mountain bike trails. In winter, there are also cross-country ski trails and toboggan runs. In summer, a speedy scooter ride leads to the next highlight, the Höllgrotten dripstone caves.
Those who do not want to climb the Zugerberg on foot can reach the valley station of the Zugerberg funicular railway by bus no. 11, which runs every 15 minutes from Bahnhofplatz or Postplatz in the Old Town.
Constant Dripping
“Constant dripping wears away the stone” is a well-known proverb. In the Lorze ravine near Zug, however, the constant dripping has not just worn away the stone, but also produced amazing new forms. The Höllgrotten caves present an enchanting subterranean world of stalactites and stalagmites, which have been formed here over the last 3,000 years.
